Congratulations to Nick and Toby!

17 January 2012

As you may know, Nick Moore, brother to Amanda and uncle to Melissa and Oliver Bembridge, achieved a fantastic win together with his rowing partner, Toby Iles as they crossed the finishing line first in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge rowing race last Saturday.  The 17 crews left the Canary Islands on 5th December and 40 days, 9 hours and fifteen minutes, after a nail biting tussle with second place solo rower, Andrew Brown in his boat, JJ, they were first at the Port St Charles finishing line in Barbados.

Nick and Toby were rowing Box Number 8 and have been raising money for international charity, Shelterbox who provide immediate supplies to people displaced from their homes by natural or man made disasters around the world.  Rowing in shifts of two hours on and two hours off, Toby and Nick, who normally manage and market aircraft on behalf of DVB Bank beat Andrew by just one nautical mile.  Toby said, "It feels brilliant to win.  We traded places for the entire race and swapped leads four or five times; Andrew built up a lead several times so it was a surprise to pip him at the post."

Class 2 gave Nick a laminated Flat Stanley character from the Flat Stanley books which they've been reading together as a class.  They were thrilled to find that he had also made the crossing relatively unscathed and the class are now writing letters from Flat Stanley describing his experiences of the Atlantic.
