It all adds up for Y5 Mathematicians

Year 5 children doing calculations

A team of four Y5 lovers of solving mathematical puzzles headed off to The Portsmouth Grammar School this week to take part in a maths challenge.

The small team was split into a girls’ and boys’ duo and given challenges featuring shape, numbers and dominoes.

Teacher Tom Allen said, “The competition was palpable in the room.  All of the children from across many primary schools seemed however to be very much relishing the challenge.”

Kingscourt was represented by Daniel F, Toby R, Bella G and Jessie B.  They all said they enjoyed taking part and were thrilled when they heard that the girls had come in second in their group with the boys finishing sixth in theirs.

Deputy Headteacher and Mathematics Subject Leader, Jamie Lewis said, “It was very pleasing to see how much pleasure the team got out of spending time working out maths problems up against the clock and against other schools.  Each member of our team conducted themselves with great maturity and focus, we’re proud of that as well as their excellent result.”
