Year 5 Pupils Work Hard to Help Koalas

Last week in Y5H, the class began talking about animals which they like and the conversation quickly turned to the plight of koalas caught up in the bushfire crisis in Australia. Class teacher, Caroline Hubbard said, “After some discussion, we decided that we could help by raising some money ourselves. I encouraged the children to ask their parents for any odd jobs they could do such as: washing the car, washing up, hoovering, sorting out and pairing socks (for a week) which they eagerly took up.”

One of our pupils, Zac Bembridge, decided to email his aunt, Melanie, who lives in Australia to try to find out a little more about how the country is dealing with the indigenous animal situation. As luck would have it, she had connections with the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital’ in New South Wales so was able to give the class, together with Y5L, an update this morning via Skype. The animal hospital is looking after a lot of koalas injured in the bushfires.”

Well done to all of the children who have already been fundraising including Georgina who spent the weekend baking little cakes and selling them to family and friends. Also to Zac for finding such interesting articles and photographs to help inform his classmates of the enormity of the crisis amongst Australia’s animal and human population.
