The Physical Education and Games programme at Kingscourt aims to put into place the building blocks which help our children to enjoy a broad range of sports with competence and confidence as they move into senior school and in adult life. All of our staff contribute to the PE and sports lessons and extra curricular activities, not just the PE staff; this sends a strong message that sport is for all and not just coaches and ‘sporty’ people. We celebrate involvement and success in assemblies and in our newsletter; children report on matches, win, lose or draw.
PE lessons in the pre-prep department focus on Fundamental Movement or Motor Skills. These skills are essential to help children gain confidence in movement. As they move through the programme, they begin to play fun small sided games which, as they grow into the Prep department start to appear as traditional games such as rugby, football, cricket, lacrosse, netball, hockey and rounders. Our spacious Multi Use Games Area means that rain doesn’t stop play. Children use this all weather surface to play hockey, football, netball and tennis throughout the year.
Our teams begin to compete against other schools as our children reach Year 3. They enjoy travelling for fixtures, tournaments and festivals across all of the sports offered here at Kingscourt. There is also a chance for leadership as our Year 6 children are nominated Captain or Vice-Captain. For those who prefer individual sports, we offer tennis, fencing, running, cross-country, judo and gymnastics.
